'Stay' (opening which begins with the end) - deconstruction

'Stay' opening
Point 1: Wheel
Camera Angles/Shots/Movements:
Point of view shot of the wheel spinning off, this is disorientating for the viewer and informing the viewer that it's a crash. Gives the viewer short clips of events e.g the two cars following etc. Canted framing of the road etc giving the impression that something is not quite right.
Sound:
There isn't much sound apart from the wheel screeching against the ground which is uncomfortable to listen to and once again links to a crash. This also makes it dream like for the audience as the lack of noises around the wheel create a confusing and dream like effect.
Editing:
Cross cutting is used throughout the opening scene to create a once again disorientating effect and to aid the point of view shot of a wheel. This makes it effective because it takes time before the audience realise they are the 'point of view' of a wheel and as it has rarely been done it is a rather unique opening.
Mise En Scene:
The circular composition subverts the idea of protection and being safe as it is showing a crash.
The diagonal composition of the road suggests that there is something not right with this scene/something is going wrong.

Point 2: Sitting down
Camera Angles/Shots/Movements:
The camera movements generally consist of a panning movement both vertically and horizontally, also zooming in and out of the person on the floor. This gives the idea of time moving and the person staying there for a long time, and gives the audience a better grasp of where this person is. There are also bird eye views of the man on the floor which gives an impression of vulnerability. He is also generally shot at the right side of the frame so he isn't taking up much of the shot showing perhaps his lack of power in the situation and his isolation. The close up shot of the fire in the background could show his detachment from human emotions as he is not worried about the fire he
just looks a bit sad/bored with life.
Sound:
There is diegetic sound of the fire in the car which links once again to the crash. There is also a violin or wind instrument playing in the background, which is playing a sombre piece consisting mainly of minor notes. It is also not a proper song which could indicate that he is separate/has separated himself from the world he is meant to belong in.
Editing:
There is a graphic match of a shot of him farther away merging into a closer shot of him. This is effective as we are getting closer to him and his surroundings and once again being drawn to the fact that he is on one side of the screen. Diegetic sound of the siren telling us that he is either being chased or is going to be helped. Non diegetic sound of the screeching of tyres in his head (which following the flashback of the wheel tells us he is thinking of the event) The sounds become more musical as the scene goes on to create a more sombre song.
Mise En Scene:
The dark colours around give a very sombre mood which makes the opening quite depressing. As he is more on the right of the two lines we can get from that that perhaps he is straying from his path. The fact that is moves on from the wheel to this shows the jump in time and him sitting on the floor happened not that long after the accident but some time ago. The back of his head is in darkness suggesting the separation of his mind from his body and the struggles he is going through. Diagonal composition in the background one again tell us something isn't quite right with him.

Point 3: Walking away
Camera Angles/Shots/Movements:
Medium shots of him walking away showing his separation from us. He is once again at one side of the screen showing the lack of power he has with himself. Birds eye view of him as he walks showing his vulnerability perhaps within himself.
Sound:
Becomes louder as he approaches the camera, siren is still in the background but the music is overpowering it leading up to something and creating tension.
Editing:
Cross cuttings of the different angles as he walks showing the time drag out for the man which could represent his life dragging out which contrasts against the second man's fast paced life showing his busy life and the amount of actions he is doing in the first 5 mins displays their differences.
Mise En Scene:
A lot of reds and oranges connoting a risk of death, the yellow of the taxi's suggest impatience perhaps with his life.

Point 4: Close up
Camera Angles/Shots/Movements:
Close up shot of the first man's face followed by a close up of the second man's face. Then goes into most low angle shots of the second man as he goes about his life showing the difference of power between the two.
Sound:
Sound bridge moving from the first man to the second man as he wakes up showing that there is a link between them and the are to be connected at some point within the movie.
Editing:
Graphic match of the first man's face into the second man's showing once again the links and similarities between the two men but also their differences.
Mise En Scene:
They both have a shadow across half of their face showing perhaps the similarities they hold however the surroundings of the first man are completely different to the second man's home and bed showing the difference in their situations.
